BHAI TARU SINGH JI
Bhai Taru Singh born in Amritsar and his sister Tar Kaur, were raised Sikhs by their widowed mother.
Bhai Taru Singh and his sister served the gursikh revolutionaries who were plotting the overthrow of the Mughal governor of Punjab, Zakaria Khan at the time. Bhai Sahib and his sister were arrested for treason.
After a period of imprisonment and torture, Bhai Taru Singh was brought before Zakharia Khan and told Khan that his strength was through his keshas (‘unshorn hair’) that had been blessed by Guru Gobind Singh ji. Khan ordered his hair to be cut off to dispossess him of his strength. When his hair could not be cut by the barber, the emperor ordered him to be scalped. An unfazed Bhai Sahib ji refused to convert to Islam still.
According to prominent early Sikh historian Ratan Singh Bhangu, Bhai Taru Singh ji cursed Zakaria Khan to be killed by his shoes. This was come true in the next 22 days. It is the resolve of great men like Bhai Taru Singh ji that continues to inspire millions to stand for their principle in the face of unspeakable oppression.
